Petrol in Pakistan

Petroleum is one of the most widely used vehicle fuels worldwide as well as in Pakistan. It is also known as petrol and is widely available across the country. Petroleum, or gasoline, is obtained by the partial distillation of crude oil. Petrol prices in Pakistan change frequently and can be easily found here. The quality of petroleum is determined by its octane number. Octane number indicates how well the petroleum can resist knocking and provide efficient performance. There are several prominent petroleum suppliers in Pakistan, including Pakistan State Oil, Attock Petroleum Limited, Total Parco, Shell Pakistan, and Hascol Petroleum. These oil refinery companies are responsible for most of the distribution of petrol in Pakistan. For a long time, Pakistan had a low-grade petrol supply in the country while the rest of the world was using better quality fuel in their vehicles. Even the most underdeveloped countries have better quality fuel supply than Pakistan. It was the year 2016 when Pakistan started importing better quality petrol with higher research octane number (RON), 92 to be exact.

Petrol Rate in Pakistan

Petrol prices have always been a topic of discussion in the Pakistani media. Still, there is a lot of misinformation surrounding the petrol pricing process. Several factors play a role in determining petrol prices in the country. Crude oil is used to make gasoline and other petroleum-based products. From the exploration and production of crude oil, to the refining and distribution process, many different industries are involved in providing finished petroleum products. All these industries add their cost to the price of petrol. Above all, the government adds a tax amount to the cost of fuel. The international market rate of oil also plays a big role within Pakistan. Oil prices also fluctuate based on the value of the rupee in the international market. Due to depreciation of rupee since 2018, oil prices have also increased for Pakistan in the international market. In 2021, the government of Pakistan tried to control petrol prices in the country by reducing the tax margin. Although successful, the tactic was not a long-term fix. Such problems are common to developing countries like Pakistan that are heavily dependent on imported oil. This increases the price of oil and makes it difficult for consumers to buy petrol. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) controls the prices of petrol in Pakistan. Ogra has a practice of revising fuel prices twice every month. New prices are announced on the 15th and last day of every month and are generally applicable for the next 15 days. Additionally, the cost of gasoline varies in different parts of Pakistan. Petroleum prices in Pakistan are directly related to the global changes in oil and gas. However, they are also impacted by a wide range of other regional elements, like the availability of petroleum resources in the nation, the state of the economy, political unrest, etc. As a result, people witness frequent fluctuations in fuel prices.
